Two times per year, the Los Angeles Rowing Club conducts a Learn-to-Row (LTR) program to teach the sport of rowing to individuals with no prior sweep rowing experience or to those who desire a refresher course. The program is open to adults of any age who are dedicated to learning a new sport. What to expect:The LTR program will teach you the fundamentals of rowing, terminology, boat-handling skills and safety. Rowing technique is learned first on the ergometer (rowing machine) and then practiced on the water, weather and crew permitting, for the remainder of the course. We teach sweep rowing (one oar per person) in crews of eight. There is always an experienced coxswain with you. Our emphasis in this course is on basic technique, learning crew teamwork and having fun! All equipment is provided. The course is taught by our experienced club volunteers and is open to any individual from 18 years of age and older (there is no upper age limit); however, we are limited to 20 individuals per session. Learn to Row Classes:The Fall 2011 LTR program goes from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on September 24th and 25th. There will be a barbecue following the Learn to Row class on Sunday, so plan accordingly.
The cost of the program ($150) includes three months of rowing with the club.
Given the approval of an LTR coxswain, LTRs may be permitted to advance into novice boats prior to the end of the quarter; these rowers will still be required to row at least once per week with the LTR boats.
Payment is required at the time of registration and is non-refundable. Suggestions:Do you have any rowing exposure or indoor "erg" experience? If not, we encourage you to try the "erg" (land rowing) before the Learn to Row weekend. Most fitness centers have "ergs" available as part of their workout equipment. You can also go to iROW Fitness Studio in Los Angeles and rent time on their equipment without having to get a membership. iROW also offers a FREE 30 minute INTRO to indoor rowing Saturdays at 11:30am. RSVP is required. The fashion police will not be attending, but for comfort it's recommended that you DO NOT wear baggy shorts or sweats, because they get caught in the seat tracks. Bike shorts are ideal. Wear sneakers the first day for the ergometers, and wear layers for the weather. Bring bottled water. Registration:
The Fall 2011 Learn to Row class has reached its capacity. We are no longer taking any new rowers. Please check back later for the next Learn to Row. |
