About Los Angeles Rowing Club

Who We Are:
A member of the United States Rowing Association (USRA), LARC is a non-profit community rowing club dedicated to providing competitive and recreational rowing opportunities at the lowest possible cost to its members. LARC is located in Marina Del Rey and is the only community Masters rowing club in the city of Los Angeles. LARC offers novice, intermediate, and advanced programs in sweep (one oar per person) rowing. We strive to educate new rowers, support experienced rowers in their fitness and competitive goals, promote recreational rowing in Marina del Rey, and play a dynamic role in the broader Los Angeles athletic community.
Our membership is diverse in age, ethnicity, and interests. LARC members range in age from 18 to 80. Some row for recreation, fun and community, some row to maintain health, some advanced crews hire coaches to develop the skills and fitness to compete in all levels of Masters rowing throughout California, the United States, and internationally.
LARC is a member-run and managed by officers annually elected by the membership. All members are encouraged to take part in our leadership. We rely on member volunteers for club events and monthly boat maintenance. All club dues are used to maintain and upgrade club equipment, to promote LARC crews competing in USRA sponsored regattas, and fund social gatherings for club members.
Our History:
LARC is a sweep rowing club with a fleet of 3 coxed 4's and 4 coxed 8's. Our club does not have a boathouse or any facilities such as locker rooms, erg rooms, etc. We are simply a group of competitive and recreational masters rowers that store our six shells on the racks on the beach. There is a small beach bathroom near the boat racks. We do water launch as there is not a dock. Operation wise, we do things a bit differently than many other clubs. LARC has an individual captain for each crew that goes out. Each captain is responsible for creating lineups for their weekly row. This is not your traditional boathouse operation, but has the benefit of being able to row with your preferred crew based on your priorities. Once you become a new member, you will be added to a list of members that captains will contact to add to their boats. You will also be provided a boat schedule and captain contact info so that you can also contact captains directly. The club does not make any lineup for any boat.
In the 1987, the aerospace engineering firm TRW funded the formation of a sweep rowing club in Marina del Rey to serve the interest of its employees. When the company sponsorship ended, the Los Angeles Rowing Club was formed. Over the course of nearly 35 years, LARC has grown to serve over a thousand unique members, training nearly the same number of new rowers how to row for the very first time. LARC members are drawn to rowing for various reasons, but we are united in our passion for the sport and the joy of being out on the water together.
